On Monday 10th September 2018, the Year 5’s and 6’s went to the ILN Science Forum in Wongan Hills. The students were split up into different groups with students from other ILN schools. They then completed a number of different activities based on Science topics. A huge thank you to Joey Seymour, Richard Topham and Michelle Barnard for assisting with transporting the students. Below are some examples of the different activities.
Heidi and I were in group B. Our favourite activity was the Hidden Towers. What we did first was go into the grass area with all the other schools. We then went into the hall and got put into four groups just from the people in group B. Then we had to find a person to look at the pictures. The other three people had to try to make what the photo person was describing, out of Lego. There was one picture person that looked at the picture, a person that got the message from the picture and two people that built the construction and got the message from the message carrying person. Then once we had finished that, we put all the boards together and made one with all four groups. At the end we all got a chocolate.

One of the activities was making a rollercoaster out of a cut in half rubber pipe, masking tape, a plastic cup and some pipe cleaners. We had to include a turn and a loop. The pipe was bendy but it was quite hard making a turn. We used a chair and put the top of the rollercoaster on the top of the chair so the marble (the rollercoaster tester) had lots of momentum going down the roller coaster. We had our loop on the bottom and the turn came after the loop and then the marble would roll into the plastic cup. We got 2 metres of the rubber pipe. The group with the fastest time for the marble to reach the cup wins but you had to use all of the pipe. My group came 4th out of 6 groups with a time of 1.58 seconds. The winning group had a time of 1.42 seconds. This activity was my favourite one.

At the Science Forum my favourite activity was Dynamic 1 where you had to trade a block you had for a different one that you needed. You had to make the orders out of Lego in the right colour. If you wanted to trade a block, you would tell your forklift, which would then tell a ship, which would get the blocks you need. You were in groups with students from other schools. We spent half an hour on the activity. It was hard working with people you don’t now. The group next to us was trying to steal our blocks. I liked the activity because it had Lego. My group came out on top in both the 30 seconds challenge and 25 minute challenge.
